Online casino legal in Germany from July 1, 2021. This was made possible thanks to the state law on gambling that came into force. Players across Germany can now register by providing their name and age for an account. The organizers must verify the information. This point should also not allow children and minors to take part in the game.
There is also a financial limit for players. The maximum deposit to a player’s account is 1,000 euros per month. The restriction applies to all providers. They are required to use software to detect gambling behavior suggestive of addiction.
Profit must be taxed
The new rules also apply to existing sportsbooks. In the case of live sporting events, bets on the game can no longer be advertised, and active athletes can no longer advertise bookmakers. In addition, all winnings, whether from online casinos or sports betting, should be taxed at the rate of 5.3%. This innovation causes disapproval from operators. Among other things, the German Sports Betting Association criticizes the growing popularity of the black market in the gambling segment.
The new law should also work against this black market. It is debatable whether this works, including in terms of limiting use. In addition, gambling providers are not only affected by online innovation.
The new rules also affect offline casinos. For example, in Baden-Württemberg, the distance between casinos and children’s and youth institutions must be at least 500 meters. As a result, gambling halls may have to be closed, and there is also a risk that employees will lose their jobs, experts predict.
